The Morse Phone

The Morse Phone can be used to get started with the Morse code. You can use him to practice, but you can also pair two or more Morse Phones and send messages to each other.

The Morse Phone is designed by Service Kring for Scouting JOTA & JOTI events.

It is a Morse beep that can be used standalone but also can be linked with other Morse Phones, after all, you communicate together! The Morse Phone is inspired by the Fuller phone, a bit of history.

The Fuller phone is a Morse telegraphy device that has been developed
during the first world war by major A.C. Fuller. In the years after that, the
Fuller phone is further developed and remained in use until after the second
world war. The ideas of A.C. Fuller were not new but he has managed to
make a device that could be applied in war situations and harder to
eavesdrop than the already existing telegraphy equipment.

The Morse Phone can be used in several ways:
Independent, as Morse sounder, the Morse Phone will give a beep if the key is pressed.
Linked to one or more other Morse Phones (or a real Fuller phone).

  1. Some hints and tips for building the Morse Phone

    The Piezo speaker,
We (and a customer) built a Morse Phone that was proven detectable using The LED, but didn’t make a beep. This information is also included in the building description. In this case, the Piezo speaker will not work. During transport in the package, the legs are sometimes pressed and / or twisted.
As a result, the legs do not make good contact internally or cause a short circuit

This is easily resolved by loosening and removing the bottom of the speaker.

Then it’s about bending the legs into the model and closing the bottom and carefully soldering the speaker into the PCB. Please note that when you put it back, the legs will not be pressed again.(Short on feet measure ~ ~ 0 Ohm, Open and good functioning specimen both measure infinite high resistance)

    Coil
A coil was found that was interrupted. Resistance should be between 20 and 50 ohms for the good coil and the wrong copy measures infinity. Again we can carefully look at the pins for a loose leg, but one of the 2 coils can be bridged to solve the problem and keep the Morse Phone working properly.
